The 4th song in The Beatles début album, Chains is a song composed by Gerry Goffin and Carole King. It was was a major hit for The Cookies, an American R&B girl group famous in the 50s and 60s. Members of the original line-up would later become the backing vocalist for Ray Charles, The Raelettes.

"Chains" was a popular cover song for upcoming Liverpool bands after The Cookies single was released in the UK in November 1962. Chains was briefly included in The Beatles live performances, leading them to include the song in their first album.

Harrison
This song is notable for a few things. This was George Harrison's first of two songs being in the lead vocal. George did not really have a great voice (as opposed to John and Paul) which made Ian MacDonald, a music critic, to criticize The Beatles' performance on this song as "slightly out-of-tune" and "lack spontaneity". Ian MacDonald is best known for his detailed history of The Beatles. I personally might argue that the song is perfect as it is as The Beatles is unique in that way where each member of the group will sing, regardless of how good they are. They are, a band after all. And George, he did improve throughout the years.
Lennon with the harmonica

The song also features early Beatles' trademark of harmonica introduction at the start of the song. As you continue to listen to The Beatles, you will notice that the harmonica (played by Lennon, rumoured to be of Hohner made ) will be included in most of The Beatles early composition.

Hope you enjoy the song and find it in you to find the unique sound of George Harrison's voice.
